Surnah

Surnah (spelt SOOR-NAH) is one of the Three Tribes of Tharelia. Its capital is the city of Surnarah. It is the biggest and most populous country on the planet.

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

Surnah is located between the longitudes 90° W and 90° E and the latitudes 0° and 50° S. Once dominated by vast jungles, the continent today has forests at the Northwest, the region known as The Yazhir. Tundras and frozen lands dominate the geographic scenario in the Southern lands.

Temperatures vary from +42° C at the Yazhir Jungles to -56° C at the Southern island called The Anhill. The capital Surnarah has a temperature range of 25° C to 38°C.

HISTORY

5,000 years ago explorers from the continent of Erlah arrived at the jungles of Yazhir, founding the city of Surnarah and many other settlements. Soon, warlords and chieftains created hundreds of independent city-states with their own set of laws. With the unification brought by followers of Thar the Elder 3,000 years ago, the country also created a Constitution and a common Civil Law. But the tradition of local overlords continued, administrating communities and sometimes extorting Surnah citizens by threatening.

DEMOGRAPHY

Surnah ethnicity is the medium to dark-skinned Akhat Hemitic. The population of the country is 4,298,618,580. There are also c. 120,000 An'hals, non-Hemitic indigenous people living at the frozen lands of the Anhil Island. The capital Surnarah has 22,310,000 inhabitants. 72% of the country's population live below the poverty line and at least 10% live in extreme misery.

POLITICAL ORGANIZATION AND GOVERNMENT

In Surnah, the Head of State has tenure and is called "Imperator" (or "Imperatrix" for females). He or she has the prerogative of choosing his/her own list of successors. Local administration is done by commune chieftains. Surnah has its own Armed Forces, but local governments can have their own limited Armies.

CULTURE AND SOCIETY

33% of Surnah population follow the Erlah Orthodox Church. 15% are atheists and 52% follow pagan local cults.

Surnah alphabet uses the Habikh characters.

The indigenous, non-Hemitic An'hal population from The Anhil follows the monotheistic Cult of the Diamond and speaks the An'halic language.

ECONOMY

Surnah economy is extractive. The country exports fruits and vegetables to Nopah and Erlah, as well as oil and coal from the Southeastern regions of the country. The economy of local communes is based on the trading of grains, beverages and livestock.

CURRENT AFFAIRS

Despite the economic weakness of the country, Surnah warlords spend billions of tharions annually importing weapons and aircraft from Nopah. It is estimated that the trading of weapons between local chieftains and Nopah war factories surpasses the official Surnah GDP by 55%. Erlah representatives warn Nopah and Surnah central governments about the dangers of the arms race promoted by local chieftains.

The country saw in the last decades the creation of a paramilitary group called "The Flock", operating from the slums of Surnarah. The group intends to unify a part of the local communes and create an independent nation. The supreme leader of "The Flock" today is Thar Akthar.
