Nopah

Nopah (spelt NOH-PAH) is one of the Three Tribes of Tharelia. Its capital is the city of Yontah, at the East Coast. It is the richest and the most developed nation of the planet, with the biggest centres of scientific research and technological development.

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

Nopah is located between the longitudes 0° and 90° W and the latitudes 0° and 50° N. The country has vast plains to the East and large deserts to the West, separated by the Nomorah Mountains at the Midwest. Forests were not common at the times of the first colonizers, and today the continent is almost devastated.

Temperatures vary from +45° C at the Equator to -35° C at the Northern Islands. The capital Yontah has a temperature range of 10° C to 25°C. Snowstorms are frequent at the Northern Tundras.

HISTORY

The region received the visit of Erlah navigators and explorers 5,000 years ago. They built a settlement at the region of Yontah and started to explore the continent to the West. The vastness of the country and its relative isolation was favourable to the development of an advanced civilisation based on scientific knowledge and technological discoveries.

DEMOGRAPHY

Nopah ethnicity is the Ashkari or the Hemitic light-skinned. The country has today 2,534,628,800 inhabitants, the second-most populous of the planet. There are 256 cities with more than 1 million inhabitants. 35% of the population live below the poverty line, most of them living in slums around the big cities.

POLITICAL ORGANIZATION AND GOVERNMENT

Nopah follows the autocratic model of the other nations of Tharelia. Presidential candidates are chosen from a group of prominent personalities of the society and the President is elected by the members of the High Chambers. Presidential term has 10 years.

People above 20 years old are allowed to vote on local representatives, with a term of 5 years.

CULTURE AND SOCIETY

15% of Nopah population follow the Norlah Church, a local branch of Erlah Orthodox Church. 10% follow Surnah pagan cults and 75% are atheists. Nopah society is extremely technological-oriented and individualistic. Personal communication gadgets are ubiquitous, but the central government controls every aspect of Nopah's life, with street recognition cameras and iris-scanning devices.

Despite exacerbated materialism, Nopah society respects symbols and traditional dates like the Thar Shvar, celebrated at the 20th day of the 10th month of the year. All married women and some single ones use colourful hajis, scarves that cover their heads.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Thanks to advanced Universities and research centres, Nopah achieved technological feats never seen in the other regions. Theoretical Physics is extremely advanced and led to the development of the theory of Parallel Universes. 50 years ago a civilian-military effort was created to allow the transport of information and matter to other Universes. The project was called The Hyperon Project.

Computing and electronic miniaturization are extremely advanced. Quantum computers can calculate the Wave Function of an entire Universe in a few minutes. Artificial Intelligence led to the development of military robots and mechs capable of image recognition and decision making. And the Aerospace industry of the country develops military aircraft used by Nopah Air Force and also by other nations.

Nopah heavy industry makes an intensive utilization of fossil-origin energy. Thanks to the presence of thousands of Thermoelectric plants in the country, the local atmosphere is extremely polluted, causing several respiratory illnesses to the population.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Nopah is today an allied of several Surnah chieftains that spend millions of Tharions in military weapons and aircraft. The trading is condemned by central Surnah government, that accuses Nopah of arming rebel groups, especially The Flock. Tensions are rising between the two nations, and leaders of the Erlah Church are calling for mutual understanding.
